Lesinurad is used together with other medicines (xanthine oxidase inhibitor) to help lower uric acid levels in your body.
Build-up of uric acid in your body can cause gout. This medicine is used to treat such conditions.
Take Lesinurad exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
It is best to take this medicine in the morning with food and water. Try to take it at the same time each day.
Lesinurad should always be taken with a xanthine oxidase inhibitor. Take it at the same time with your dose of xanthine oxidase inhibitor.
Lesinurad must be taken regularly for it to be effective. Continue taking this medicine even when you feel better. Do not stop taking it unless instructed by the doctor.
If you miss taking the dose of Lesinurad in the morning, do not take it later in the day. Wait and take your next dose of Lesinurad in the morning with your dose of xanthine oxidase inhibitor.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- severe kidney disease
- undergoing dialysis or have undergone kidney transplant
- tumour lysis syndrome (a condition in which there is a fast breakdown of cancer cells in the body)
- Lesch-Nyhan syndrome (rare inherited disorder)
as Lesinurad may not be suitable for you.
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
To avoid dehydration, ensure adequate fluid intake while you are being treated with this medicine.
Genes may affect an individual’s response to certain medicines. Researchers say that certain genetic traits can affect the effectiveness or can enhance the side effects of Lesinurad. Individuals who are poor metabolisers of CYP2C9 may have an increased risk of experiencing the side effects of this medicine. Though not routinely done, but in some exceptional cases, your doctor may advise you to take genetic testing to check if this drug is best suited for you.
For as long as you are taking this medicine, you may need to have regular blood tests to check your kidney’s condition and your body’s response to the medicine. Your doctor will advise you about how often you will need to have these tests.
Lesinurad may cause any of the following side effects: headache, flu, and heartburn (burning pain in your chest caused by food or acid from your stomach that backs up into your mouth).
Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience a reduced amount of urine or if you are unable to pass urine.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- medicine to treat fungal infection e.g. fluconazole
- medicines for high blood pressure or heart disease e.g. amlodipine, nisoldipine, felodipine
- cholesterol-lowering medicines e.g. lovastatin, simvastatin
- medicine used for erectile dysfunction e.g. sildenafil
- medicines for fits or seizure e.g. valproic acid, carbamazepine
- aspirin (blood-thinning medicine)
- birth control pills
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Lesinurad.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
