Ivabradine is used to treat chest pain and heart failure (weakness and inability of the heart to pump blood).
Ivabradine may be used to treat other conditions as decided by your doctor.
Take Ivabradine exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more than instructed by your doctor.
This medicine should be taken with food or immediately after a meal. Try to take it at the same time each day.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- heart disease
- severe liver disease
- very low blood pressure (blood pressure less than 90/50 mmHg)
- heart rate maintained exclusively by pacemaker
as this medicine may not be suitable for you.
Do not take Ivabradine with medicines used to treat fungal infection (e.g. ketoconazole, itraconazole), medicines used to treat HIV infection (e.g.nelfinavir, ritonavir), antibiotics (e.g.clarithromycin, erythromycin), medicines for high blood pressure and abnormal heart rhythm (e.g. verapamil, diltiazem) and medicines used to treat depression (e.g. nefazodone). Please see the section “Can I take this with other medicines?” below for more information.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- eye disease e.g. retinitis pigmentosa (inherited disease causing slow loss of vision)
- mild to moderate case of low blood pressure
- high blood pressure
- other heart problems e.g. congenital QT syndrome (an inherited disease causing fast heartbeats)
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
For as long as you are taking Ivabradine, regular monitoring of the heart rate must be done to check your body's response to the medicine.
Ivabradine may cause dizziness and blurred vision. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.
Other side effects may include any of the following: headache, nausea, diarrhoea, muscle cramps, irregular and often fast heart beat, irregular and slow heart beat, visual disturbances e.g. seeing geometric patterns, random spots of color, bright lights with eyes closed.
Do not take this medicine with the following medicines:
- medicines for fungal infection e.g. ketoconazole, itraconazole
- medicines for bacterial infection e.g. clarithromycin, erythromycin
- medicines for viral infection such as HIV e.g. nelfinavir, ritonavir
- medicines for depression e.g. nefazodone
- medicines for irregular heartbeat e.g. diltiazem, verapamil
Inform your doctor if you are taking any of these;
- medicines for TB e.g. rifampicin
- medicines for epilepsy (seizures or fits) e.g. phenytoin
- St. John's Wort (herbal medicine)
- medicines used for high blood pressure and heart disease e.g. digoxin, amiodarone
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Ivabradine.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol and grapefruit juice.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
