Indications and Dosage

Oral
Acute migraine attacks

Adult: As mucate: 130 mg at the onset of an attack, then 65 mg hrly thereafter as necessary. Max dose: 325 mg in 12 hr.

Contraindications

Porphyria; severe hypertension; severe renal and hepatic impairment; organic heart disease.

Special Precautions

CV diseases; hyperthyroidism; DM; pregnancy, lactation; angle-closure glaucoma.

Adverse Reactions

Dizziness, circulatory disturbances, rash, haematological disorders.

Drug Interactions

May antagonise hypotensive effects of adrenergic neurone blockers. Increased risk of hypertension with doxapram, oxytocin. Increased risk of ergotism with ergotamine and methysergide.
Potentially Fatal: Increased risk of hypertensive crisis with MAOIs, moclobemide. Increased risk of toxicity (severe hypertension) with bromocriptine.

Action

Description: Isometheptene is an indirect-acting sympathomimetic and acts as a vasoconstrictor.

Storage

Store at controlled room temperature 15-30°C (59-86°F).
