Contents
Cilastatin 500 mg, imipenem 500 mg
Indications/Uses
Complicated abdominal, UTI & skin & soft tissue infections; pneumonia; infections caught during or after delivery of the baby. Other bacterial infections.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IV Administer dose ≤500 mg/500 mg over 20-30 min & >500 mg/500 mg over 40-60 min. Adult & adolescent 500 mg/500 mg every 6 hr or 1,000 mg/1,000 mg every 6 or 8 hr. Childn ≥1 yr 15 mg/15 mg or 25 mg/25 mg/kg/dose every 6 hr.
Contraindications
Allergy to imipenem, cilastatin or other antibiotics eg, penicillins, cephalosporins or carbapenems.
Special Precautions
Present or history of allergies to any medicines including antibiotics. Present or history of colitis or any other GI disease; kidney or urinary problems including reduced kidney function; CNS disorders eg, localized tremor or epileptic seizures; liver problems. Patients on a controlled Na diet. May develop a +ve Coombs test. Concomitant use w/ valproic acid or Na valproate. May affect ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy & lactation. Not recommended in childn <1 yr or w/ kidney problems.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea; swelling & redness along a vein; rash; abnormal liver function; increased WBC.
Drug Interactions
Concomitant use w/ ganciclovir; valproic acid or Na valproate or any blood thinners eg, warfarin.
