Granisetron is used to prevent nausea and vomiting associated with cancer chemotherapy (cancer treatment) and radiation therapy.
Take Granisetron exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
For the prevention of nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy and radiation therapy, Granisetron is usually taken 1 hour before treatment.
You may take Granisetron with or without food.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
Inform your doctor if you have the following:
- history of intestinal (bowel) blockage or severe constipation
- heart disease
- galactosemia (inherited disorder, inability to digest galactose)
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Granisetron may cause dizziness. If affected , do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.
Other side effects of Granisetron include any of the following: constipation, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort, indigestion, weakness, pain, fever, difficulty sleeping and headache.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- medicines for irregular heartbeat e.g. amiodarone, disopyramide, procainamide, quinidine, sotalol
- medicines for depression e.g. fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, paroxetine, amitriptyline
- medicines for mood disorders e.g. haloperidol
- certain antibiotics e.g. erythromycin, levofloxacin
- medicines for fungal infection e.g. fluconazole, ketoconazole
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Granisetron.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
