Fluconazole
Indications/Uses
Oropharyngeal & esophageal candidiasis; vagina & mucosal candidiasis; cryptococcal & fungal meningitis; fungal infections in patients w/ malignancy.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Oropharyngeal or oesophageal candidiasis 200 mg on the 1st day then 100 mg once daily. Max: 400 mg/day. Deep-seated candidiasis 400 mg on 1st day then 200 mg once daily for 4 wk & for at least 2 wk after resolution of symptoms. Cryptococcal meningitis 400 mg on 1st day then 200 mg once daily. Max: 400 mg/day for 10-12 wk, thereafter, 200 mg once daily. Vaginal candidiasis 150 mg once daily. Neutropenic cancer 50-100 mg daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, abdominal discomfort, diarrhoea, flatulence & occasional abnormalities of liver enzymes.
Drug Interactions
Reduced serum conc w/ rifampicin. Increased serum conc w/ HCTZ. Increases plasma levels of phenytoin, sulfonylurea, hypoglycaemic agents, cyclosporin, nortriptyline & zidovudine; terfenadine; Increases effects of anticoagulants. Reduce theophylline clearance.
