Fremanezumab - subcutaneous

Patient Medicine Information
Why do I need this medicine?
Fremanezumab is used to prevent migraine in individuals who have at least 4 migraine days per month.
How do I use this medicine?
Fremanezumab is to be injected subcutaneously (into the fatty layer under the skin, usually in the thigh, upper arm or abdomen area).

If you or your caregiver had been given the proper training on the preparation and injection techniques of this medicine, you or your caregiver may do the administration.

Remember to rotate the injection sites. Do not inject into the same area all the time. New injection sites should be at least 1.5 inches away from the previous injection site. Do not inject near the navel (belly button). Do not inject onto areas of your skin that are red, bruised, tender, hard or not intact.

Fremanezumab injection is available as a pre-filled syringe or pen.

How to use this medicine:
  1. Ensure that you receive all the supplies that you need (e.g. pre-filled syringe or pen, alcohol wipes, cotton balls or gauze pad, adhesive bandage, puncture-resistant sharps container).
  2. Remove Fremanezumab from the refrigerator and allow to reach room temperature for 30 minutes.
  3. Wash your hands with soap and water.
  4. Choose and clean your injection area using alcohol swab. Dry the skin for 10 seconds before injecting.
  5. Prepare the injection. Pull the needle protective cap of the pre-filled syringe or pen straight off. Do not twist. Do not touch the needle shield area.
  6. Place the pre-filled syringe or pen against your skin at the injection area.
  7. If you are using a pre-filled syringe, insert the needle into the pinched skin at 45° or 90° angle, then slowly push the plunger all the way until it injects fully the dose. If you are using the pre-filled pen, press down the pen at 90° angle, and do not move for at least 30 seconds. You will hear the 1st “click” (this signals the start of injection). Keep pressing until you hear the 2nd “click”, then wait another 10 seconds to make sure all medicine is injected.
  8. Remove the pre-filled syringe or pen from your skin and dispose it straight away into a sharp disposal container or according to your doctor or pharmacist’s instructions. Do not throw away in household trash.
  9. Use a clean, dry cotton ball or gauze to gently press on the injection site for few seconds. Do not rub the injection site.
The dose of this medicine will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment timeframe depending on your condition.
