Each sachet contains crystalline glucosamine sulfate as glucosamine sulfate potassium chloride 1992.15 mg equivalent to glucosamine sulfate 1500 mg.
Pharmacology: Glucosamine sulfate may stimulate the synthesis of proteoglycans and collagen by cartilage cells as well as perhaps inhibit enzymatic degeneration of collagen. Glucosamine does not produce direct analgesia.
Pharmacokinetics: About 90% of glucosamine administered orally as a glucosamine salt gets absorbed from the small intestine and from there it is transported via the portal circulation to the liver, with only 10% appearing in the feces. It appears that a significant fraction of the ingested glucosamine is catabolized by first-pass metabolism in the liver. The absorbed glucosamine, 25% will be excreted in the urine, 65% excreted as exhaled carbon dioxide, with the remaining 10% retained in tissues.
Degenerative joint disease eg, osteoarthritis.
1 sachet dissolved in a glass of water with meal daily.
Obese Patient (>75 kg body weight): Typical daily dose is 20 mg/kg bodyweight.
Patients taking diuretics may also need to take higher dose. Full benefits take 4-6 weeks to develop. In case of intense pains, it is advisable to take an anti-inflammatory drug in addition during the initial period of treatment with Flexsa.
Glucosamine sulfate appears to possess good safety record. Safety for young children, pregnant or nursing women, or those with severe liver or renal disease has not been established. Side effects when they do appear are generally limited to light to moderate gastrointestinal symptoms, including stomach upset, heartburn, diarrhea, nausea and indigestion. If these symptoms occur, the glucosamine sulfate should be taken with meals.
Result of the Portuguese study suggests that patients on diuretics might need to take higher doses of glucosamine for full effect. No other drug interactions are known. However, formal drug interaction studies have not been performed.
