Contents
Ferrous fumarate, folic acid, cyanocobalamin.
Description
Each soft capsule contains ferrous fumarate 162 mg, folic acid 750 mcg, cyanocobalamin 10 mcg.
Indications/Uses
Prevention and treatment of iron deficiency anemia in pregnancy, nursing and menstruation. In cases of chronic or acute blood loss, dietary restriction, metabolic disease and post-surgical convalescence.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adults: 1 soft cap once daily.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to any of the components of Feropac. Infants <12 months. Patients with hemochromatosis, hemosiderosis and non-iron deficiency anemia. Histories of nephrolithiasis, hyperoxaluria and oxalate dysbolism (risk of calculus) and thalassemia (risk of increased iron absorption). Large doses >1 g daily of vitamin C shall always be avoided in patients with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency (risk of hemolytic anemia).
Special Precautions
Do not exceed recommended dose. In case that high dose is used for a long time, drug tolerance may occur. Patients with gastrointestinal diseases eg, peptic ulcer, chronic ulcerative colitis and localized colitis.
If any improvement is not shown after 1 month of therapy, consult the physician or the pharmacist.
Use in children: Accidental overdose and toxic death may occur when iron-containing product is used to children <6 years.
Adverse Reactions
Constipation, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, dark stools and bellyache may occur. Usually, these side effects are transient.
Taking high doses of vitamin C (>1 g/day) may result to hyperoxaluria, nausea, vomiting, heartburn, abdominal cramps, fatigue, flushing, headache, insomnia and sleepiness. Diarrhea may occur after oral dosage of >1 g/day. Ascorbic acid rarely causes hemolytic anemia, cardiac failure and flank pain.
Drug Interactions
When Feropac is concurrently used with anti-aldosterone agent or triamterene, hyperkalemia may occur.
Feropac should not be concurrently used with: Phosphates, calcium salts, oral tetracyclines, antacids and levodopa.
Teas containing tannins eg, green tea and red tea may decrease iron absorption.
Storage
Store in a well-closed container, cool and dry place. Protect from light.
