Ceftriaxone Na 1,000 mg, sulbactam Na 500 mg
Indications/Uses
Treatment of infections caused by susceptible organisms in the lower resp tract, urinary tract, bones & joints, skin & soft tissues, acute bacterial septicemia, chronic suppurative otitis media, surgical prophylaxis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult (≥18 yr) 1.5-3 g 24 hrly or in 2 divided doses. Max: 6 g/day in divided doses. Duration of therapy: 5-14 days. Pre-terminal renal failure (CrCl <10 mL/min) Limit dose to <3 g.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to β-lactams, penicillin, other cephalosporins. Not recommended in patient <18 yr, preterm & hyperbilirubinaemic newborns.
Special Precautions
Pseudomembranous colitis may occur w/ cephalosporins. Discontinue if hemolytic anemia occurs. May impair ability to drive & use machines. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Local reactions eg, pain, induration, tenderness; rash; eosinophilia, thrombocytosis, leukopenia; diarrhea, pseudomembranous colitis; elevated SGOT or SGPT, BUN.
Drug Interactions
Probenecid may result in increased & prolonged blood levels of sulbactam. Antagonistic effect w/ combination of chloramphenicol & ceftriaxone. False-positive results in Coombs' test & urine-glucose determinations. Ceftriaxone may adversely affect the efficacy of OCs.
