Theophylline
Indications/Uses
Symptomatic relief or prevention of bronchial asthma & reversible bronchospasm associated w/ chronic bronchitis & emphysema.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to xanthines, peptic ulcer, underlying seizure disorders.
Special Precautions
Hyperemia, HTN, cardiac disease, CHF, alcoholism & peptic ulcer. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain, diarrhea. Headache, irritability, insomnia, muscle twitching, clonic & tonic generalized convulsions. Palpitation, tachycardia, extrasystoles, flushing, hypotension, ventricular arrhythmias. Tachypnea, potentiation of diuresis, alopecia, rash.
Drug Interactions
Decreased theophylline levels: Barbiturates, charcoal, ketoconazole, rifampin, smoking & sulfinpyrazone. Increased theophylline levels: Allopurinol, nonselective β-blockers, Ca-channel blockers, cimetidine, OCs, corticosteroids, disulfiram, ephedrine, interferon, macrolides & quinolones.
