Dimeticone - topical

Dimeticone is used on its own or together with other medicines to prevent or treat dry, cracked, flaky, itchy skins and minor skin irritation such as diaper rash and to prevent bed sores.

Dimeticone is also used to treat head lice infestation. Head lice are tiny insects that lives on human scalp and feed on blood.

Apply Dimeticone exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not use more often or over a larger area than instructed by your doctor.

Dimeticone is available as cream, lotion or solution.

If you are using cream or lotion, follow these steps:

1. Wash your hands.
2. Clean and dry affected area before application.
3. Rub the cream or lotion gently on the skin until it disappears. Do not cover, wrap or bandage the area unless instructed by the doctor.
4. Do not rub in the medicine that came in a swab.
5. Wash your hands after using.
6. Replace the cap of the tube.

If you are using the solution for head lice treatment, follow these steps:

1. Dry your hair before using the shampoo.
2. Apply sufficient solution to cover hair from the base to the tip and ensure evenly spreading of the solution.
3. Wash your hands after using.
4. Allow hair to dry naturally then leave solution on for at least 8 hours or overnight. Do not cover, wrap or bandage the area unless instructed by the doctor.
5. Rinse your hair and scalp. Wash it thoroughly and let your hair dry.
6. If lice are still present after first treatment, repeat after 7 days.

Avoid contact with eyes when applying the solution. Do not apply on broken skin or open wounds.

Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose to make up for a missed dose.

Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving this medicine to an infant younger than 6 months. Children may be more sensitive to the side effects.

Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Avoid hair exposure to open flame or other source of ignition during or after application.

How can I prevent lice or mite infestation at home?

1. Avoid direct skin-to-skin or hair-to-hair contact with an infested person.
2. Avoid contact with the infested person’s belongings e.g. combs, hair accessories, hats, towels, clothing, bedding.
3. Clean and vacuum the room of an infested person, and machine-wash and dry-clean all his/her clothing and bedding.
4. If you are a close contact of the infested person, seek treatment immediately.

Dimeticone may cause any of the following side effects: skin irritation, eye irritation, and an itchy or scaly scalp.

Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.

Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.

Avoid alcohol.

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
