Gliclazide
Indications/Uses
NIDDM. DM not controlled w/ other oral antidiabetic agents.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Starting dose: 40-80 mg daily, increased until adequate control is achieved. Max dose: 160 mg. Majority cases or in higher doses: 2 tab daily at breakfast & dinner. Elderly Starting dose: 1/2 tab.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to gliclazide or to other sulfonylureas & related drugs. IDDM; diabetic ketoacidosis, diabetics undergoing surgery, after severe trauma or during infections. Pregnancy.
Special Precautions
Hypoglycemia. Hepatic &/or renal impairment.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, headache, rashes & GI disturbances.
Drug Interactions
Potentiated hypoglycemia in concomitant use w/ sulfonamides, salicylates, phenylbutazone, β-adrenoreceptor blocking agents, MAOIs, ketoconazole & miconazole. Decreased hypoglycemic action in concomitant use w/ thiazide diuretics, corticosteroids & estrogens.
