Contents
Co-amoxiclav (amoxicillin & clavulanic acid). Per 600 mg vial Amoxicillin 500 mg, clavulanic acid 100 mg. Per 1,200 mg vial Amoxicillin 1,000 mg, clavulanic acid 200 mg
Indications/Uses
Severe ENT, resp & urinary tract, skin & soft tissue (including dental), bone & joint & intra-abdominal infections; genital organ infections in women. Prevention of infections associated w/ major surgical procedures in adults & childn.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn weighing ≥40 kg 1,000 mg/200 mg every 8 hr. Prevention of infection during & other surgery 1,000 mg/200 mg prior to the surgery & when patient is given the anesth. Dose may differ depending on type of operation & may be repeated if surgery takes >1 hr. Childn weighing <40 kg & ≥3 mth 25 mg/5 mg/kg every 8 hr, <4 kg & <3 mth 25 mg/5 mg/kg every 12 hr. All doses may be administered either by slow IV inj over 3-4 min directly into a vein or via drip tube or by infusion over 30-40 min. Duration: Not >2 wk.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to amoxicillin, clavulanic acid or penicillin. Patient w/ history of severe allergic reaction to any other antibiotic; liver problems or jaundice when taking antibiotic.
Special Precautions
Not suitable for IM administration. Patient w/ glandular fever; irregular urine output. May worsen existing conditions or cause serious side effects eg, allergic reactions, convulsions & inflammation of large intestine. Affects results of blood tests (eg, RBC status tests or LFTs) or urine tests (for glucose). Side effects may make patient unfit to drive. Hepatic & renal impairment. Pregnancy & lactation. 1,200 mg vial: Patients on controlled K diet.
Adverse Reactions
Skin rash, vasculitis, fever, joint pain, swollen glands in neck, armpit or groin, swelling of face or mouth, collapse; inflammation of large intestine. Thrush; diarrhoea.
Drug Interactions
Probable allergic skin reaction w/ allopurinol. Probenecid; warfarin. Affects efficacy of MTX. May affect efficacy of mycophenolate mofetil.
