Chlorphenamine helps relieve the symptoms of cold and allergy such as runny nose, sneezing, and itchy and watery eyes.
It also helps relieve allergic skin conditions such as hives and itchy rash due to food or medicines, insect bites, or chickenpox.
Take Chlorphenamine exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
You may take this medicine with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day.
Chlorphenamine is available as a conventional or extended-release tablet, syrup or oral solution.
If you are taking the conventional tablet, swallow it whole with a glass of water.
If you are taking the extended-release type of tablet, swallow it whole. Do not divide, chew or crush the tablet.
If you are taking the syrup or oral solution, shake the bottle well before you take it to ensure that the liquid is evenly mixed. Use the measuring spoon or cup provided to measure your dose.
You may stop taking Chlorphenamine once you feel better, unless your doctor has instructed you otherwise.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- narrow-angle glaucoma (increased pressure in the eye caused by blocked drainage canals)
- enlarged prostate gland with apparent symptoms
- asthma attack
- peptic ulcer (a sore on the lining of your stomach, small bowel or oesophagus)
- obstruction at the neck of the bladder or stomach outlet
as Chlorphenamine may not be suitable for you.
Do not take this medicine if you are currently taking or have taken a medicine that is used to treat depression known as a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as isocarboxazid, phenelzine and tranylcypromine in the last 14 days.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- heart disease
- high blood pressure
- increased pressure in the eye
- thyroid disease
- asthma or other long term breathing disorders e.g. bronchitis (a condition where your airways are inflamed and produce a lot of mucus)
- fits or seizures
- enlarged prostate gland
- obstruction of the area involving the genital organs and urinary tract
- liver disease
- kidney disease
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving this medicine to a child or the elderly. Children and elderly people may be more sensitive to the side effects.
Chlorphenamine may cause drowsiness, dizziness or blurred vision. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert or need to see clearly.
Other side effects include any of the following: dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain, tiredness or weakness, increased or loss of appetite, disturbance in attention, and headache.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Do not take Chlorphenamine if you are currently taking or have taken medicine to treat depression known as a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as isocarboxazid, phenelzine and tranylcypromine in the last 14 days.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking or using any of these medicines:
- medicines for sleep disorders
- strong painkillers
- medicines for mood disorders
- phenytoin (medicine for fits or seizures)
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Chlorphenamine.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements, and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Protect from light.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
