Cefuroxime axetil
Indications/Uses
Upper & lower resp tract infections, skin & soft tissue infections, UTI, bone & joint infections & gonococcal infections. Treatment & prevention of Lyme disease.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & adolescent ≥13 yr Pharyngitis/tonsillitis, acute bacterial maxillary sinusitis 250 mg bd for 10 days. Acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, uncomplicated skin & skin structure infections 250 or 500 mg bd for 10 days. Secondary bacterial infections of acute bronchitis 250 or 500 mg bd for 5-10 days. Uncomplicated UTI 125 or 250 mg bd for 7-10 days. Uncomplicated gonorrhea 1,000 mg as a single dose. Early Lyme disease 500 mg bd for 20 days. Childn Acute otitis media & bacterial maxillary sinusitis 250 mg bd for 10 days. Pharyngitis/tonsillitis 125 mg bd for 10 days.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
History of hypersensitivity to cephalexin or other cephalosporins.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity to β-lactam antibiotics. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Hypersensitivity reactions, GI disturbances.
Drug Interactions
Loop diuretics, aminoglycosides.
