Dosage/Direction for Use

Adult High cholesterol Starting dose: 5 mg or 10 mg dose. Max: 40 mg daily. Patient at risk of having a heart attack, stroke or related health problems Recommended dose: 20 mg. Childn 6-17 yr Starting dose: 5 mg. Max: 10 mg, 10-17 yr Max: 20 mg once daily.

Overdosage

Administration

May be taken with or without food.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity; Liver disease; moderate to severe kidney problem; repeated or unexplained muscle aches or pains; currently or have taken fusidic acid in the last 7 days; ciclosporin; fibrates; impaired thyroid gland; alcoholic; Asian origin. Pregnancy & lactation.

Special Precautions

Repeated or unexplained muscle aches or pains; alcoholic; severe respiratory failure; impaired thyroid gland; currently or have taken HIV infection medications, fibrates. Lactose intolerance. May affect ability to drive or operate machinery. Renal & hepatic impairment. Pregnancy & lactation. Asian origin. Adult >70 yr; childn <6 yr; childn & adolescents <18 yr (40 mg dose).

Adverse Reactions

Severe allergic reactions eg, difficulty in breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, throat, severe itching; headache, dizziness; stomach pain, constipation; feeling sick, muscle pain, feeling weak; rhabdomyolysis; Stevens-Johnson syndrome; jaundice, hepatitis; traces of blood in urine.

Drug Interactions

Concomitant use w/ fusidic acid may lead to muscle weakness, tenderness or pain; altered effects w/ ciclosporin, warfarin, fibrates, indigestion remedies, medicines used to lower cholesterol, erythromycin, OCs, ritonavir w/ lopinavir &/or atazanavir.
