Indications and Dosage
Intravenous
Infections due to Pseudomonas aeruginosa Adult: Usual dose: 6 g daily in 4 divided doses; for less severe infections: 3-4 g daily may be used.
Child: Usual dose: 100 mg/kg daily; for less severe infections: 50 mg/kg daily. |

Renal Impairment
In patients undergoing haemodialysis: 1 g is given before and after dialysis.

Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.

Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity to penicillins; renal impairment; porphyria. Monitor renal and haematologic status.

Adverse Reactions
Nausea; vomiting; diarrhoea; hypersensitivity reactions; nephrotoxicity; convulsions; CNS toxicity; hepatic dysfunction; haematologic disorders; pain at inj site (IM); thrombophloebitis (IV infusion); superinfection with prolonged use.
Potentially Fatal: Pseudomembranous colitis. |

Drug Interactions
Reduced renal clearance when used with probenecid.
Potentially Fatal: Increased risk of nephrotoxicity when used with aminoglycosides or loop diuretics. |

Action
Description: Cefsulodin has a narrow spectrum of activity. It is active against P. aeruginosa (which can be enhanced by aminoglycosides) but no significant activity against other gram-negative bacteria. Gram-positive bacteria and anaerobes are not very susceptible. It is also stable to hydrolysis by many β-lactamases.
Pharmacokinetics: Distribution: Up to 30% bound to plasma proteins. Excretion: Plasma half-life of about 1.6 hr; prolonged in renal impairment. Mainly excreted via urine. |
