Carbocisteine is a mucolytic. It helps clear the chest by making the phlegm (mucus) less sticky and easier to cough up when you have common cold, flu, and infections of the airways that can cause excessive production of phlegm.
Take Carbocisteine exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor or pharmacist.
Take it together with food or immediately after a meal. Try to take it at the same time each day.
This medicine is available as a capsule, tablet, syrup, or oral solution.
If you are taking the oral solution or syrup, shake the bottle well before you take it to ensure that the liquid is evenly mixed. Use the measuring spoon, cup, or oral syringe provided to measure your dose. Refer to the package insert for directions on how the oral syringe should be used.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
Alert your doctor if you have stomach or bowel ulcers as Carbocisteine may not be suitable for you.
Do not give this medicine to children below 2 years old unless instructed to do so by the doctor.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- history of ulcers in the stomach or bowel
- asthma or other lung diseases
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving Carbocisteine to a child or the elderly. Children and elderly people may be more sensitive to the side effects.
Carbocisteine may cause any of the following side effects: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and stomach discomfort.
Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
- pass out bloody or black as tar stools and vomiting blood or ground coffee-like material
- rashes, breathlessness, swelling of the face, eyes, or mouth
- rashes with peeling of the skin or blistering of the lips, mouth, or eyes accompanied by fever
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
