Indications and Dosage
Oral
Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease
Adult: 20 mg tid.

Topical/Cutaneous
Mouth ulceration
Adult: Apply 2% gel 4 times daily.
Contraindications
Hypokalaemia; cardiac failure and in those receiving cardiac glycosides. Pregnancy, elderly, child <3 yrs.
Special Precautions
Cardiac disease, hypertension, impaired hepatic or renal function.
Adverse Reactions
Sodium and water retention, hypokalaemia.
Drug Interactions
Antagonism with amiloride and spironolactone. Exacerbates hypokalaemia associated with diuretics.
Potentially Fatal: Risk of toxicity with digitalis glycosides.
Action
Description: Carbenoxolone is a synthetic derivative of glycyrrhizinic acid (a constituent of liquorice). It acts by protecting the mucosal barrier from acid-pepsin attack and increasing mucosal mucin production.
Pharmacokinetics:
Absorption: Absobed in the GI tract, mainly from the stomach.
Distribution: Highly bound to plasma proteins.
Excretion: Mainly excreted in the faeces via the bile.
