Indications/Uses
Softcap: Established postmenopausal osteoporosis; renal osteodystrophy in patients w/ chronic renal failure particularly those undergoing hemodialysis; postsurgical hypoparathyroidism; idiopathic hypoparathyroidism; pseudohypoparathyroidism; vit D-dependent rickets; hypophosphatemic vit D-resistant rickets. Inj: Management of hypocalcemia in patients undergoing chronic renal dialysis. Improvement in renal osteodystrophy by reduction of parathyroid hormone levels.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Softcap Renal osteodystrophy Initially, 0.25 mcg, may be increased by 0.25 mcg daily at 2-4 wk intervals. Postmenopausal osteoporosis 0.25 mcg bd Hypoparathyroidism & rickets 0.25 mcg/day in the morning. Inj Initially 0.5 mcg (0.01 mcg/kg) 3 times wkly, approx every other day, may be increased by 0.25-0.5 mcg at 2-4 wk interval.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Diseases associated w/ hypercalcemia. Evidence of vit D toxicity.
Special Precautions
Softcap: Monitor for possible development of hypercalcemia & hypercalciuria. May increase serum phosphate levels. Avoid vit D intake. Concomitant use w/ digitalis. Not for treatment of bone loss & post menopausal osteoporosis. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn.
Adverse Reactions
Inj: Vit D toxicity; mild pain at inj site.
Drug Interactions
Mg-containing antacids. Vit D derivatives, cardiac glycosides. Reduced efficacy w/ barbiturates & anticonvulsants.
