Calcitonin is used to treat osteoporosis. This medicine helps strengthen thin and weak bones in women who are at least 5 years postmenopausal when alternative treatments are not suitable.
Use Calcitonin exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not use more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Try to administer it at the same time each day.
To use the nasal spray, follow these steps:
1. Allow the nasal solution to be in room temperature. Remove the cover and press the pump a few times until a full and even spray is produced
2. With your head on an upright position, place nozzle into nostril and ensure firm fit.
3. Administer the recommended dose into your nostril by pressing the pump.
4. Wipe and cap the nasal spray.
Calcitonin must be used regularly for it to be effective. Continue using this medicine even when you feel better. Do not stop using it unless instructed by the doctor.
Do not share your nasal spray with others as it could spread infections.
Administer the missed as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to use your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Keep your appointments with your doctor. Routine tests in your nose maybe needed while you are being treated with this medicine. Your doctor may also need to do bone density test to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly.
Calcitonin may cause any of the following side effects: nose bleed or irritation, nausea, vomiting, headache, back and joint pain.
Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
- difficulty breathing
- swelling of the tongue or throat
- rashes
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking medicines for mood disorder e.g. lithium.
Always notify your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
If the nasal spray has not yet been opened, store it in the refrigerator, between 2-8°C. Do not allow to freeze. If frozen, this medicine will become ineffective and should not be used.
Once it is opened, store the bottle in an upright position in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
