Calcipotriol is used on its own or together with other medicines to treat plaque psoriasis (a type of skin disease that is caused by itchy patches of thick, red skin and silvery scales) that affects the body or scalp.
Apply Calcipotriol exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not use more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Calcipotriol is available as cream, ointment, foam or scalp solution.
If you are using the ointment, cream, or scalp lotion, follow these steps:
- Wash your hands.
- Clean and dry affected area before application.
- Rub Calcipotriol gently on the skin until it disappears. Do not cover, wrap or bandage the area unless instructed by the doctor.
- Wash your hands after using.
- Replace the cap of the tube or bottle.
If you are using the foam, follow these steps:
- Wash your hands.
- Turn the container upside-down and put small amount of the preparation onto a saucer or other cool surface, do not place directly into your hands.
- Rub Calcipotriol gently on the skin or scalp until it disappears. Do not cover, wrap or bandage the area unless instructed by the doctor.
- Wash your hands after using.
Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to apply your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- high calcium levels in the blood
- abnormal metabolism of calcium
- severe liver disease
- severe kidney disease
as Calcipotriol may not be suitable for you.
Do not use this medicine in children below 6 years old unless instructed to do so by the doctor.
Do not use Calcipotriol with medicines or supplements that contain vitamin D or calcium.
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving Calcipotriol to a child.
Certain factors such as dry and cold weather, stress, trauma to the skin, infections, alcohol, and smoking can trigger or worsen psoriasis. Take good care of your skin by keeping it clean, moisturized and free from cuts and infections. Avoid going out during dry and cold weather. Learn to manage your stress, avoid alcohol, and quit smoking. Regular exercise, eating a balanced diet, and maintaining a healthy weight are also good for your overall health and wellness.
Avoid contact with face or eyes. Rinse immediately with water if this medicine gets onto your face or eyes. Alert your doctor if you start to have itch or redness of the facial skin or any problems with your eyes.
Do not apply on skin that is discharging fluid or pus.
Do not apply on the face.
Calcipotriol may cause any of the following side effects: irritation, itch, redness, dryness, burning or stinging sensation, and darkening of skin.
Calcipotriol may also make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Apply sunscreen when going outdoors and avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight and UV lamps.
Do not use Calcipotriol with medicines or supplements that contain vitamin D or calcium e.g. calcitriol.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are using salicylic acid.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place, away from the reach of children.
Keep Calcipotriol in their original package to protect from light.
Do not refrigerate or freeze.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
