Ibandronic acid
To reduce risk of fractures in postmenopausal osteoporosis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take at least 1 hr before the 1st food/beverage/medication of the day w/ a glass of plain water (180-240 mL) & remain in an upright position for 1 hr. Do not take w/ mineral water. Swallow whole, do not chew/suck. Preferably taken at the same date each month.
Hypersensitivity. Uncorrected hypocalcaemia. Abnormalities of the esophagus which delay esophageal emptying eg, stricture, achalasia. Patients unable to stand or sit upright for at least 60 min.
Special Precautions
Discontinue use if dysphagia, odynophagia, retrosternal pain or new/worsening heartburn develop. Patients w/ active upper GI problems eg, known Barrett's esophagus, dysphagia, other esophageal diseases, gastritis, duodenitis or ulcers. Risk factors for osteonecrosis of the jaw &/or other oro-facial sites including external auditory canal. Esophagitis, esophageal ulcers/erosions; gastric & duodenal ulcers. Treat hypocalcaemia & other disturbances of bone & mineral metabolism prior to treatment. Ensure adequate Ca & vit D intake. Concomitant use w/ NSAIDs. Renal impairment (CrCl <30 mL/min). Not to be used during pregnancy & lactation. Childn <18 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Gastritis, GERD, diarrhea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, nausea; headache; flu-like illness, muscle cramp, musculoskeletal pain & stiffness, arthralgia, myalgia; rash.
Drug Interactions
Interfered absorption w/ products containing Ca & other multivalent cations (eg, Al, Mg, Fe) including milk & food; Ca supplements, antacids & some oral medications containing multivalent cations.
