Azithromycin dihydrate
Indications/Uses
Upper resp tract infections including pharyngitis, tonsillitis, sinusitis; lower resp tract infections including bronchitis & pneumonia; STD including non-gonococcal urethritis & cervicitis; otitis media; skin & skin structure infections.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Community-acquired pneumonia (mild), pharyngitis/tonsillitis (2nd-line therapy), skin/skin structure infection (uncomplicated) 500 mg as single dose on day 1, followed by 250 mg once daily on days 2-5. Acute bacterial exacerbation of COPD (mild to moderate) 500 mg for 3 days or 500 mg as single dose on day 1, followed by 250 mg once daily on days 2-5. Acute bacterial sinusitis 500 mg for 3 days. Genital ulcer disease (chancroid) & non-gonococcal urethritis & cervicitis 1 g as single dose. Gonococcal urethritis & cervicitis 2 g as single dose.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to azithromycin or any macrolide.
Special Precautions
May lead to overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms. Not to be administered concomitantly w/ ergot derivatives. Hepatic & severe renal impairment. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea & flatulence; rashes & reversible elevations in liver transaminases.
