Indications and Dosage

Intravenous
Differential diagnosis of Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, Supraventricular arrhythmias, Ventricular arrhythmias

Adult: 50 mg via IV inj over at least 5 minutes. May also be given by IV infusion, IM inj and oral route.

Contraindications

Digitalis overdosage; complete heart block; lactation; hypersensitivity.

Special Precautions

Incomplete heart block, uncompensated heart failure; myasthenia gravis; elderly; pregnancy. Initiate therapy with extreme caution during acute infections or fever.

Adverse Reactions

Heart block; cardiac arrhythmias; eye twitching; convulsions; resp depression; hepatotoxicity; agranulocytosis.
Potentially Fatal: Coma.

Drug Interactions

Quinidine.

Action

Description: Ajmaline directly interferes with depolarization of the cell membrane by blocking the fast inward current of Na into cardiac cells. It slows the rate of change of the depolarization phase of the action potential, moderately prolong the PR, QRS and QT intervals on ECG monitoring. It also has local anesth properties.
