Cefixime
Indications/Uses
Treatment of the following acute infection when caused by susceptible organisms: UTI, upper & lower resp tract infections; typhoid fever.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Cap Adult 1 or 2 cap daily as a single dose or in 2 divided doses for 7-14 days. Susp Childn >12 yr Adult dose; 11-12 yr 15 mL or 300 mg; 5-10 yr 10 mL or 200 mg; 1-4 yr 5 mL or 100 mg; 6 mth to 1 yr 3.75 mL or 75 mg; >6 mth 8 mg/kg body wt as a single dose or in 2 divided doses for 7-14 days.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ food or milk to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics. Childn <6 mth.
Special Precautions
History of GI disease eg colitis. Severe renal failure (CrCl <20 mL/min). Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhoea, stool color changes, nausea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, vomiting, flatulence; headache, dizziness; hypersensitivity reactions; haematological changes; serum amylase elevation.
