Acetylcholine is used to help the pupil of your eyes to contract during eye surgeries such as cataract surgery.
Acetylcholine solution is to be given by intraocular irrigation (drop by drop into the eye).
The solution will be prepared right before it is used during an eye surgery.
The dose of this medicine will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor or nurse will instill the solution in your eyes.
In cataract surgery, this medicine will be used after the replacement lens has been inserted into the eye.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- asthma
- stomach problems e.g. spasm, ulcer
- heart disease
- low blood pressure
- hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid)
- Parkinson’s disease (a brain disease that affects movement)
- urinary tract obstruction (urine flow disorder due to a blocked bladder, kidney, ureter or urethra)
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Acetylcholine may temporarily cause some problems with your eyesight such as pain, irritation, swelling or clouding.
Other side effects include any of the following: slow heart rate, flushing, excessive sweating and shortness of breath.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription
Avoid alcohol.
Store below 25°C, away from the reach of children.
Do not freeze it.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
The reconstituted Acetylcholine solution must be used immediately. Discard any unused solution.
