Indications/Uses
Analgesic & anti-inflammatory effects in juvenile RA & soft-tissue injuries eg, sprains & strains. Analgesic effect in relief of mild to moderate pain eg, dental pain. Symptomatic relief of headache. Short-term use for pyrexia in childn >1 yr.
Dosage/Direction for Use
20 mg/kg daily in divided doses. Childn 8-12 yr 10 mL tds-qds, 3-7 yr 5 mL tds-qds, 1-2 yr 2.5 mL tds-qds. Juvenile RA Up to 40 mg/kg daily in divided doses. Not to exceed 4 doses in 24 hr.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take w/ food & a glass of milk to minimise stomach upset.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to ibuprofen, aspirin or other NSAIDs. Active GI bleeding &/or peptic ulceration. Not recommended for infants <1 yr.
Special Precautions
Severe skin reactions eg, exfoliative dermatitis, TEN, SJS. Increased risk of GI ulceration, bleeding, perforation in patients w/ prior history of serious GI events & other risk factors associated w/ PUD eg, alcoholism, smoking, corticosteroid therapy; serious CV events eg, MI. Patients w/ HTN; fluid retention or heart failure; asthma or aspirin-sensitive asthma; cardiac impairment. Closely monitor BP during & at regular intervals thereafter. Concurrent use w/ aspirin. Hepatic or renal impairment. Not recommended in childn <7 kg. Elderly & debilitated patients.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, dyspepsia, abdominal pain, melaena, haematemesis, ulcerative stomatitis, GI haemorrhage; hypersensitivity reactions; oedema.
Drug Interactions
Reduced effects of antihypertensives, mifepristone. Increased risk of nephrotoxicity w/ diuretics, cyclosporin. Exacerbated cardiac failure, reduced GFR & increased plasma cardiac glycoside levels. Decreased elimination of lithium, MTX. Increased risk of GI bleeding w/ corticosteroids. Enhanced effects of anticoagulants. Increased risk of developing convulsions w/ quinolones. Avoid concomitant use w/ ≥2 NSAIDs.
