Indications/Uses
Type 2 DM as monotherapy in adults inadequately controlled by diet & exercise alone & for whom metformin is inappropriate due to intolerance or CI. Add-on combination therapy w/ glucose-lowering drugs eg, insulin when together w/ diet & exercise is inadequate.
Dosage/Direction for Use
SC Monotherapy 0.75 mg once wkly. Add-on combination therapy 1.5 mg once wkly. Elderly ≥75 yr Initially 0.75 mg once wkly.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Not to be administered IV or IM. Not to be used in type 1 DM or for diabetic ketoacidosis. Discontinue use if acute pancreatitis occurs. Not recommended in severe GI disease eg, severe gastroparesis. Increased risk of hypoglycaemia. CHF. May affect ability to drive & use machines. Not recommended in ESRD. Not recommended during pregnancy. Not to be used during lactation. Childn <18 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Hypoglycaemia; nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, abdominal pain. Decreased appetite, dyspepsia, constipation, flatulence, abdominal distention, GERD, eructation; fatigue; sinus tachycardia, 1st degree AV block.
Drug Interactions
Increased exposure w/ sitagliptin. Drugs requiring rapid GI absorption.
