Indications and Dosage
Topical/Cutaneous
Superficial dermatophyte infections
Adult: As 1% gel/soln/powd/cream: Apply a thin layer to the affected area(s) bid. As powder/liq spray: Spray a thin layer to the affected area(s) bid. Treatment duration: 2 wk (tinea cruris); 4 wk (tinea corporis, tinea pedis).
Child: 2 yr Same as adult dose.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.
Special Precautions
Not intended for use for nail or scalp infections.
Adverse Reactions
Dermatologic: Irritation, contact dermatitis, pruritus, stinging.
Patient Counseling Information
Avoid contact w/ eyes.
Action
Description:
Mechanism of Action: Tolnaftate is a synthetic thiocarbamate antifungal agent which inhibits the growth of dermatophytes (e.g. Epidermophyton, Micosporum, Trichophyton spp., Malassezia furfur) by distorting the hyphae and stopping mycelial growth in susceptible fungi. It is inactive against Candida spp. or bacteria.
Onset: 24-72 hr.
