Contraindications
Untreated thyrotoxicosis of any aetiology; uncorrected adrenal insufficiency; arteriosclerosis; pregnancy.
Special Precautions
Only for specific approved indications and under strict medical supervision, not as a treatment for obesity. CV disorders; elderly; DM; diabetes insipidus; adrenal cortical insufficiency.
Adverse Reactions
Fatigue; lethargy; profound wt loss; severe diarrhoea. Abnormal thyroid function test.
Potentially Fatal: Heart attacks and stroke.
Overdosage
Hypermetabolic state similar to thyrotoxicosis.
Drug Interactions
Increased hypoprothrombinaemic effect of anticoagulants; increased risk of coronary insufficiency with sympathomimetic agents; additive effects with thyroid drugs.
Lab Interference
Alter thyroid function tests.
Action
Description:
Mechanism of Action: Tiratricol is a metabolite of tri-iodothyronine and has thyroid hormone activity. It is given by mouth to suppress TSH secretion. It is found in dietary supplements for weight loss.
