Indications and Dosage
Topical/Cutaneous
Nail fungal infections
Adult: As 28% soln: Apply to the affected nails and immediately surrounding skin 12 hrly for up to 6-12 mth.
Elderly: Same as adult dose.
Child: Same as adult dose.

Vaginal
Vaginal candidiasis
Adult: As 6.5% oint: Insert 1 applicatorful intravaginally at bedtime as single dose.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.
Special Precautions
Self-medication in patient w/ DM, HIV infection. Girls <12 yr (vag). Pregnancy and lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Vulvovaginal burning and irritation, vaginitis, pruritus, vulvovaginal disorder and desquamation, vag pain, vulvar oedema or swelling, vag discharge, vag dryness, rash and dyspareunia; headache, abdominal pain, dysuria, nocturia, pharyngitis, rhinitis; transient, minor increases in LDH, AST (SGOT) and ALT (SGPT). Contact dermatitis, burning, irritation (topical).
Patient Counseling Information
Vag: Avoid sexual intercourse. Condoms and diaphragms may be damaged and fail to prevent pregnancy or STD, may resume usage 3 days after treatment. Avoid using tampons, douches, spermicides or other vag products.
Action
Description:
Mechanism of Action: Tioconazole, a synthetic azole antifungal, interferes w/ synthesis of ergosterol which is needed for fungal cell membrane synthesis.
Onset: Intravaginal: Some improvement w/in 24 hr; complete relief w/in 7 days.
Pharmacokinetics:
Absorption: Intravaginal: Absorbed systemically (small amounts).
Distribution: Persists in vag fluid for 24-72 hr.
Excretion: Via urine and faeces.
