Contents
Per 5 mL Diphenhydramine HCI 14 mg, ammon Cl 135 mg, Na citrate 57.5 mg
Indications/Uses
Expectorant for control of cough due to cold or allergy.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 2 tsp every 4 hr. Max: 12 tsp or 60 mL daily. Childn 6-11 yr 1 tsp every 4 hr. Max: 6 tsp or 30 mL daily.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Persistent chronic cough eg, occurs w/ smoking, asthma, emphysema or when accompanied by excessive secretions. Patients w/ epilepsy, glaucoma, or difficulty in urination due to prostate gland enlargement. Concomitant use w/ alcohol & other CNS depressants (hypnotics, sedatives, tranquilizers). Treatment of lower resp tract symptoms. MAOI therapy. Lactation. Newborn or premature infants.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ narrow-angle glaucoma, stenosing peptic ulcer, pyloroduodenal obstruction, symptomatic prostatic hypertrophy or bladder-neck obstruction; history of bronchial asthma, increased IOP, hyperthyroidism, CV disease or HTN. May affect ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy. Not recommended for childn <2 yr; caution in childn 2-6 yr. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Urticaria, drug rash, anaphylactic shock, photosensitivity, excessive perspiration, chills, mouth, nose & throat dryness; hypotension, headache, palpitations, tachycardia, extrasystoles; hemolytic anaemia, thrombocytopenia, agranulocytosis; sedation, sleepiness, dizziness, disturbed coordination, fatigue, confusion, restlessness, excitation, nervousness, tremor, irritability, insomnia, euphoria, paresthesia, blurred vision, diplopia, vertigo, tinnitus, acute labyrinthitis, hysteria, neuritis, convulsion; epigastric distress, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation; urinary frequency, difficult urination, urinary retention, early menses; bronchial secretions thickening, chest tightness & wheezing, nasal stuffiness.
Drug Interactions
Additive effects w/ hypnotics, sedatives & tranquilizers. Avoid drinking alcoholic beverages. Prolonged & intensified anticholinergic effect w/ MAOIs.
