Diphenoxylate HCl 2.5 mg, atropine sulphate 0.025 mg
Indications/Uses
Adjunctive therapy in management of acute & chronic diarrhea.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Initially 2 tab qds, may be reduced when diarrhea is controlled. Childn ≥12 yr 2 tab tds-qds, 8-12 yr 1 tab qds, 6-8 yr 1 tab tds.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to diphenoxylate or atropine. Obstructive jaundice; intestinal obstruction, acute ulcerative colitis. Diarrhea associated w/ certain antibiotics, pseudomembranous enterocolitis or enterotoxin-producing bacteria.
Special Precautions
Discontinue use if severe dehydration or electrolyte imbalance occurs. Signs of atropinism particularly in Down syndrome patients. Risk of drug dependence. Ensure appropriate fluid & electrolyte therapy. Prolonged use or high doses. Concomitant use w/ alcohol, barbiturates, tranquilizers. May affect ability to drive & operate machinery. Patients w/ advanced hepatorenal disease & abnormal hepatic function. Pregnancy & lactation. Not recommended in childn <6 yr. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Numbness of extremities, euphoria, depression, malaise/lethargy, confusion, sedation/drowsiness, dizziness, restlessness, headache; anaphylaxis, angioneurotic edema, urticaria, gum swelling, pruritus; toxic megacolon, paralytic ileus, pancreatitis, vomiting, nausea, anorexia, abdominal discomfort; hyperthermia, tachycardia, urinary retention, flushing, skin & mucous membrane dryness.
Drug Interactions
Precipitated hypertensive crisis w/ MAOIs. Potentiated action of barbiturates, tranquilizers, alcohol.
