Indications and Dosage
Parenteral
Acute respiratory tract infections, Susceptible infections Adult: 4-6 g/day, in divided doses by IM, IV inj or infusion.

Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.

Special Precautions
Sodium restricted diet. Very high doses in poor renal function (risk of neurotoxicity) or heart failure. Avoid contact, skin sensitisation may occur. Monitor hepatic, renal and haematological status. Spirochete infections particularly syphilis; prolonged use may lead to suprainfection with penicillin-resistant organisms; avoid intrathecal route.

Adverse Reactions
Pain at the inj site and phloebitis; electrolyte disturbances; dose-dependent coagulation defect; purpura and haemorrhage; hypersensitivity reactions including urticaria; fever; joint pain; rashes; angioedema; serum sickness-like reactions; haemolytic anaemia; interstitial nephritis; neutropenia; thrombocytopenia; CNS toxicity including convulsions; diarrhoea; antibiotic-associated colitis.
Potentially Fatal: Anaphylaxis. |

Drug Interactions
Probenecid may prolong half-life of sulbenicillin. Efficacy may be reduced by tetracyclines.

Lab Interference
May interfere with diagnostic tests for urinary glucose using copper sulfate, direct Coomb's test, and test for urinary or serum proteins. May interfere with diagnostic tests that use bacteria.
