Indications/Uses
Prevention of varicella in childn 12 mth-12 yr.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to vaccine, gelatin or neomycin. Primary & acquired immunodeficiency states. Family history of congenital or hereditary immunodeficiency. Active untreated TB; febrile resp disease or infections. Immunosuppressive therapy eg, high-dose corticosteroids. Women of childbearing potential. Pregnancy.
Special Precautions
Not to be inj intravascularly or IM. Anaphylactic reactions. Defer vaccination in the presence of acute illness eg, fever >38°C. Avoid close association w/ high-risk individuals eg, immunocompromised, pregnant women & newborn infants w/o documented history or lab evidence of prior infection for up to 6 wk following vaccination. Not to be given concomitantly w/ Ig eg, varicella-zoster Ig. Avoid pregnancy for 3 mth after vaccination in women of childbearing potential. Not to be used during pregnancy. Lactation. Not recommended in infant <12 mth. Not to be used in elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Pain/tenderness, erythema/redness, induration/swelling; irritability; fatigue/malaise. Fever, somnolence, headache; gastroenteritis, nasopharyngitis; vesicular rash.
Drug Interactions
Reye's syndrome w/ salicylates; avoid use 6 wk after vaccination. Defer vaccination for 3-11 mth after blood or plasma transfusion, Ig or varicella-zoster Ig administration. Allow 28-days interval w/ other live viral vaccines.
