Indications and Dosage
Oral
Flatulence
Adult: 100-250 mg 3 or 4 times daily, or as directed. Dosage recommendation may vary among countries and individual products (refer to specific product guideline).
Child: <2 years weighing <10.9 kg: 20 mg 4 times daily as necessary after meals and at bedtime. Max: 240 mg/24 hours. ≥2 years weighing ≥10.9 kg: 40 mg 4 times daily as necessary after meals and at bedtime. Max: 480 mg/24 hours. Dosage recommendation may vary among countries and individual products (refer to specific product guideline).
Administration
May be taken with or without food. Take after meals & at bedtime for best results.
Special Precautions
Children. Pregnancy and lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Gastrointestinal disorders: Nausea, constipation, mild diarrhoea, regurgitation, vomiting, heartburn.
Immune system disorders: Rarely, hypersensitivity reactions (e.g. rash, facial oedema, pruritus, tongue oedema, respiratory difficulty).
Drug Interactions
May diminish the absorption of levothyroxine.
Food Interaction
Avoid carbonated beverage and gas-forming food.
Action
Description:
Mechanism of Action: Simeticone, a surface-active substance, is a mixture of liquid dimeticones consisting of finely divided silicon dioxide to increase the defoaming effects of silicone. It lowers the surface tension of the intestinal mucous therefore, disperses and prevents gas pockets in the gastrointestinal system.
Synonym: activated dimeticone; activated dimethicone; simethicone.
Pharmacokinetics:
Absorption: Not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Excretion: Via faeces as unchanged drug.
