Ofloxacin
Indications/Uses
UTI, lower resp tract, skin & soft tissue infections, gonorrhoea & non-gonococcal urethritis & cervicitis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
UTI 200-400 mg once daily, increased if necessary in upper UTI to 400 mg bd for 7-10 days. Lower resp tract infections 400 mg once daily, increased if necessary to 400 mg bd for 7-14 days. Skin & soft tissue infections 200-400 mg bd for 7 days. Uncomplicated gonorrhoea 400 mg as single dose. Non-gonococcal urethritis & cervicitis 400 mg daily in single or divided doses for 7-10 days.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Take 2 hr before or after antacids or supplements containing Fe or Zn. Ensure adequate hydration.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to quinolones. History of epilepsy or lowered seizure threshold. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn or adolescents.
Special Precautions
Avoid excessive exposure to direct sunlight. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Renal or hepatic impairment.
Adverse Reactions
GI disturbances, dry mouth, headache, insomnia, dizziness, nervousness, sleep disorders, rash, pruritus, tachycardia, transient hypotension, hepatitis, cholestatic jaundice, interstitial nephritis, eosinophilia, leukocytosis, anaemia.
Drug Interactions
Antacids, sucralfate, oral antidiabetics, warfarin, theophylline, probenecid, aminoglycosides, β-lactam antibiotics, antimycobacterial agents.
