Indications/Uses
Relief & prophylaxis of reversible bronchospasm associated w/ bronchial asthma, bronchitis, emphysema & related conditions.
Dosage/Direction for Use
SR tab Adult 250 mg 12 hrly, may be gradually increased or decreased by 125 mg depending on therapeutic effect. Childn 10 mg/kg 12 hrly, >25 kg 250 mg bd, 12-25 kg 125 mg bd. Syr Adult 25 mL 6 hrly. Childn >2 yr 1 mL/kg 6 hrly. Max: 25 mL.
Administration
Should be taken with food: SR tab: Swallow whole, do not chew/crush.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity to theophylline or other xanthines. Cardiac disease, severe HTN or hyperthyroidism. Decreased clearance w/ CHF, acute pulmonary edema, COPD, pneumonia & acute febrile episodes. Renal impairment. Hepatic cirrhosis. Pregnancy & lactation. Not recommended in childn <2 yr. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
GI irritation, tachycardia, palpitations & tremor.
Drug Interactions
Decreased clearance by cimetidine & erythromycin. Avoid other xanthines. Sympathomimetics.
