Carbimazole
Indications/Uses
Hyperthyroidism. Prep for thyroidectomy in hyperthyroidism. Therapy prior to & post radio-iodine treatment.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Initially 20-60 mg titrated until euthyroidism. Maintenance: 5-15 mg daily taken as single dose. Blocking-replacement regimen Initially 20-60 mg daily + supplemental l-thyroxine 50-150 mcg daily for at least 6-18 mth. Childn Initially 15 mg daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Take consistently w/ or w/o meals.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Serious, preexisting haematological conditions. Severe hepatic insufficiency. Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
Discontinue use if onset of sore throats, bruising or bleeding, mouth ulcers, fever, malaise, neutropenia occur. Monitor white cell counts in clinical evidence of infection. Perform LFTs following onset of hepatic disorder (upper abdomen pain, anorexia, general pruritus). Regularly perform CBC in confused patients or w/ poor memory. Intrathoracic goitre. Temporary discontinue at the time of radio-iodine administration. Concomitant use w/ propylthiouracil. Mild to moderate hepatic insufficiency. Galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption. Women of childbearing potential. Elderly ≥65 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, headache, arthralgia, mild gastric distress, skin rashes, pruritus.
Drug Interactions
Intensified anticoagulants effects. Increased serum levels & toxicity of theophylline. Concurrent administration w/ drugs inducing agranulocytosis.
