Indications/Uses

Appendicitis, cholecystitis, peritonitis, liver, lung & brain abscess, post-op wound infection; puerperal sepsis, pelvic cellulitis & peritonitis; necrotising pneumonia, empyema; meningitis; septicemia, gas gangrene, osteomyelitis. Liver amoebic abscess & moribund or toxic cases of fulminating intestines.

Dosage/Direction for Use

Adult & childn >12 yr 500 mg over 20 min every 8 hr. Childn <12 yr 7.5 mg/kg over 20 min every 8 hr.

Overdosage

View Metrogyl Injection overdosage for action to be taken in the event of an overdose.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to metronidazole or other nitromidazoles derivatives. Trichomoniasis. Concomitant use w/ 10% dextrose, penicillin G K & Ringer's lactate soln. 1st trimester of pregnancy.

Special Precautions

Perform total differential leucocyte count prior to, during & after treatment. Avoid use during 1st trimester of pregnancy & lactation.

Adverse Reactions

Anorexia, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, vertigo, tiredness, dark colouration of urine.

Drug Interactions

Increased prothrombin time w/ warfarin. Acute psychosis & confusion w/ disulfiram. Avoid mixing w/ other drugs.
