Memantine HCl
Indications/Uses
Moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 5 mg daily on the 1st wk, 10 mg daily on the 2nd wk then 15 mg daily on the 3rd wk & 20 mg daily from 4th wk. Max & maintenance dose: 20 mg daily. Elderly >65 yr 20 mg daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity to bisulfites. Avoid use in patients whose urine pH is under monitoring eg, drastic changes in diet, ingestion of alkalizing gastric buffers, renal tubular acidosis, severe UTI w/ Proteus bacteria. Epilepsy, history of convulsions or predisposing factors of epilepsy. Not be taken by patients under medication of other NMDA antagonists eg, amantadine, ketamine or dextromethorphan. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Cardiac failure; dizziness, abnormal gait, seizures; constipation, vomiting, pancreatitis, fungal infections, HTN, venous thrombosis/thromboembolism; headache, fatigue; somnolence, confusion, hallucinations, psychotic reactions.
Drug Interactions
L-dopa, dopaminergic agonists & anticholinergics, dantrolene, baclofen, amantadine, ketamine, dextromethorphan, phenytoin, cimetidine, ranitidine, procainamide, quinidine, quinine, nicotine, hydrochlorothiazide.
