Lovastatin
Indications/Uses
Reduction of elevated total & LDL-C in patients w/ primary hypercholesterolaemia (types IIa & IIb), when dietary & other non-pharmacological measures alone are inadequate. Reduce elevated LDL-C in patients w/ combined hypercholesterolaemia & hypertriglyceridaemia.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Initially 20 mg daily, adjusted at 4 wkly intervals to max: 80 mg daily.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Active disease or unexplained persistent elevation of serum transaminases. Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
Perform LFTs at baseline & 4-6 wkly during 1st 15 mth of therapy. Childn.
Adverse Reactions
GI discomfort, muscle cramps, myalgia, myopathy rhabdomyolysis, dizziness, headache, fatigue, sleep disorders, insomnia, rash, pruritus, blurred vision, dysgeusia, marked persistent increases of serum transminases.
Drug Interactions
Immunosuppressants, gemfibrozil, niacin, erythromycin, itraconazole, coumarin anticoagulants.
