Loperamide HCl
Indications/Uses
Control & symptomatic relief of acute nonspecific diarrhoea & chronic diarrhoea associated w/ inflammatory bowel disease.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Acute diarrhoea 4 mg stat followed by 2 mg after each subsequent loose bowel movement. Chronic diarrhoea 4 mg stat followed by 2 mg after each subsequent loose bowel movement until diarrhoea is controlled. Maintenance: 4-8 mg daily in divided doses. Max 16 mg daily. Childn 8-12 yr 2 mg tds, >6 yr 2 mg bd. Maintenance: 1/3-½ initial dose.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Acute diarrhoea associated w/ organisms penetrating intestinal mucosa. Pseudomembranous colitis associated w/ broad-spectrum anti-infectives.
Special Precautions
Acute dysentery. Discontinue use if abdominal distension or other symptoms occur in patients w/ acute ulcerative colitis. Hepatic dysfunction. Young childn.
Adverse Reactions
Abdominal pain, constipation, nausea, vomiting; drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue, dry mouth; hypersensitivity reactions including rash.
Drug Interactions
Increased risk of severe constipation w/ opioid analgesics.
