Indications/Uses
Adult & ped patients w/ moderate to severe infections caused by susceptible strains of microorganisms, as well as initial empiric therapy prior to identification of causative organisms in complicated intra-abdominal infections, complicated skin & skin structure infections including diabetic lower extremity & diabetic foot infections, community-acquired pneumonia, complicated UTI in adults including pyelonephritis, acute pelvic infections including postpartum endomyometritis, septic abortion & postsurgical gynecologic infections. Prophylaxis of surgical site infection following elective colorectal surgery in adults.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult ≥13 yr 1 g once daily by IV infusion over 30 min or IM inj for 3-14 days. Childn 3 mth-12 yr 15 mg/kg bd by IV infusion over 30 min or IM inj for 3-14 days. Max: Not to exceed 1 g daily. Prophylaxis of surgical site infection following elective surgery Adult 1 g IV 1 hr pre-op. Advanced renal insufficiency (CrCl ≤30 mL/min/1.73 m2) including hemodialysis 500 mg daily.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to ertapenem or β-lactams. IM inj: Hypersensitivity to amide-type local anesth; severe shock or heart block.
Special Precautions
Discontinue use if allergic reaction occurs. Previous hypersensitivity reactions to penicillins, cephalosporins, carbapenems, other β-lactams, other allergens. CNS disorders eg, brain lesions, history of seizures; known factors predisposing to convulsive activity; pseudomembranous colitis. Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms. Avoid inadvertent inj into blood vessels. Not recommended in concomitant use w/ valproic acid/divalproex Na. Renal impairment. Pregnancy & lactation. Not recommended in infants <3 mth.
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhea, vomiting. Adults: Headache; infused vein complication, phlebitis/thrombophlebitis; nausea. Ped: Infusion site erythema, pain, phlebitis, swelling; rash.
Drug Interactions
Inhibited renal excretion w/ probenecid. Reduced serum conc of valproic acid.
