Acarbose
Indications/Uses
Additional therapy in association w/ diet in patients w/ DM.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Initially 50 mg tds, up to 100 mg tds. Combination w/ metformin, sulfonylureas or insulin Individualized dosage.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Swallow whole w/ a little liqd directly before meals or chew w/ the 1st few mouthfuls of meals.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Chronic intestinal disorders associated w/ distinct disturbances of digestion & absorption, conditions which may deteriorate as result of increased intestinal gas formation. Severe renal impairment (CrCl <25 mL/min).
Special Precautions
Asymptomatic elevated hepatic enzyme. Monitor hepatic enzymes during 1st 6-12 mth of treatment. Patients <18 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Flatulence. Diarrhoea, GI & abdominal pain.
Drug Interactions
Sucrose (cane sugar) & sucrose-containing foods, cholestyramine, intestinal adsorbents & digestive enzymes, digoxin, neomycin.
