Acarbose
Indications/Uses
Adjunct to diet in patients w/ DM.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Initially 50 mg tds, may be increased to 200 mg tds. Ave dose: 300 mg daily.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Swallow whole w/ a little liqd directly before meals or chew w/ the 1st few mouthfuls of meals.
Contraindications
Chronic intestinal disorders, inflammatory bowel disease, colonic ulceration, partial intestinal obstruction, major hernia, Roemheld's syndrome. Hepatic impairment, severe renal impairment (CrCl <25 mL/min). Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <18 yr.
Special Precautions
Monitor hepatic enzymes from 1st 6-12 mth of therapy.
Adverse Reactions
Flatulence, diarrhea, GI pain.
Drug Interactions
Sucrose, hypoglycaemics, intestinal absorbents & digestive enzymes, neomycin, cholestyramine, digoxin.
