Ispaghula husk
Indications/Uses
Relief of constipation eg, constipation in pregnancy & maintenance of regularity. Bowel function management in patients w/ colostomy, ileostomy, haemorrhoids, anal fissure, chronic diarrhoea associated w/ diverticular disease, irritable bowel syndrome & ulcerative colitis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult, childn ≥12 yr 1 sachet bd. Childn 6-12 yr 2.5-5 mL bd.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Best taken after meals during the day at least 30 min-1 hr before or after intake of other medicines. Stir the required amount into a glass of cold water (150 mL) & drink immediately. Do not take w/o water. Do not take immediately before going to sleep.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Sudden change in bowel habit that has persisted >2 wk. Undiagnosed rectal bleeding & failure to defecate following laxative use. Abnormal GI tract constrictions w/ oesophageal or cardia diseases; intestinal obstruction, faecal impaction; reduced GUT motility (natural- or drug-induced) & colonic atony eg, senile mega-colon; difficulty in swallowing or any throat problems.
Special Precautions
Discontinue use if hypersensitivity reactions, abdominal pain or cases of any faecal irregularity occurs. Not to be taken by patients w/ faecal impaction & symptoms eg, abdominal pain, nausea & vomiting; phenylketonuria. Diabetic patients. Not to be used w/ medicinal products inhibiting peristaltic movement eg, opioids. Ensure adequate fluid intake. Patients on thyroid hormones & controlled K diet. May impair intestinal passage & cause sub-obstruction if administered prior to bedtime. Renal impairment. Pregnancy & lactation. Not recommended in childn <6 yr. Elderly & debilitated patients.
Adverse Reactions
Flatulence, abdominal distension.
Drug Interactions
Delayed enteral absorption w/ vit B12, cardiac glycosides, coumarin derivatives, carbamazepine, lithium. Concomitant use w/ thyroid hormones.
