Fenofibrate
Indications/Uses
Hypercholesterolaemia & hypertriglyceridaemia alone or combined (types IIa, IIb, III, IV & V dyslipidaemias); secondary hyperlipoproteinaemias.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take during meals.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Preexisting gallbladder disease. Known photoallergy or phototoxic reactions w/ fibrates or ketoprofen. Hepatic or severe renal dysfunction including primary biliary cirrhosis & patients w/ unexplained persistent liver function abnormality. Childn.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity. Discontinue use if markedly elevated creatine phosphokinase levels occur or myopathy is diagnosed; liver enzyme levels persists >3 times ULN. Cholelithiasis; pancreatitis; myopathy. Regularly monitor liver function, blood counts & serum lipids during therapy. Avoid concomitant use w/ HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors. Concomitant use w/ anticoagulants, β-blockers, thiazides, estrogens. Not to be used during pregnancy & lactation. Ped patients. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Abdominal & back pain, headache, asthenia, flu syndrome; abnormal LFTs, diarrhea, nausea, constipation; increased SGPT, creatine phosphokinase & SGOT; resp disorder, rhinitis; myositis, myalgia, arthralgia, arthritis, tenosynovitis, joint disorder, arthrosis, leg cramps, bursitis, myasthenia.
Drug Interactions
Prolonged prothrombin time/INR w/ coumarin-type anticoagulants. Severe myositis & myoglobinuria w/ lovastatin. Impeded absorption of bile acid sequestrants. Nephrotoxicity w/ cyclosporine. Immunosuppressants & other nephrotoxic agents.
